Karolina Sajankova and Andy Benzo will be presenting during this exciting presentation about the European Judicial System vs. the US Judicial System
Andy Benzo, biography:

Andy Benzo has a Law Degree and a Translation Degree from her native Argentina. She has been working as a freelance Legal Translator for more than 30 years. She joined the ATA in 1999 and is ATA-certified. She is the current Assistant Administration of the Spanish Division of the ATA. She is the Host of the Podcast “Charlas de café” of the SPD.

For many years, she was an instructor in the Translation and Interpretation Certificate Program at UCSD Extension, where she taught several courses, including Legal and Business Translation, Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpretation. Andy was a founder of ATISDA (Association of Translators and Interpreters in the San Diego Area), serving as its President for 7 years. Continuing her studies in the US, she obtained a Paralegal Degree from California State, San Marcos. Past Chair of the Bylaws and Governance Committee of NAJIT (National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators.) She is a Board member of RIUSS (Research Institute of the United States Spanish.)

Andy has given many presentations at ATA conferences and in other forums nationally and internationally.

Karolína Šajánková – Biography:

Karolína Sajanková is a freelance translator and interpreter for English, German and Slovak with 15-year of experience. She is based near the capital Bratislava in the western part of Slovakia.

After her graduation as a translator and interpreter from the University of Vienna she started freelancing and specializing in legal translation. Karolína attended many CPD courses on law, e.g. Summer school coursework on German legal system and legal terminology (organized by BDÜ – the German Association of Interpreters and Translators in 2011) and Legal English Course (Oxford Royale Academy, Oxford, United Kingdom, 2014). In 2019 and 2020 she passed the Vienna Legal Language Proficiency Exam with distinction and became its first accredited lecturer in Slovakia. She is a court translator and interpreter for German and English – since 2013 and 2021 respectively when she was entered in the official register of the Slovak Ministry of Justice. Besides law Karolína has long experience in interpreting and translating texts from fields like trade, tourism and engineering.

Karolína loves books on nature and history, gardening, travelling and going to translation conferences.

In her presentation, Karolína is going to talk about

– legal prerequisites you have to meet to become a legal translator/interpreter in Slovakia, and how to prepare for the exam.

– obligations of legal translators/interpreters in Slovakia (e.g. insurance, official on-line register of translations and interpretation)

– what to expect in practice: translation and interpretation assignments, work for courts, public prosecutors, police, and individuals – best practices, practical tips and recommendations
